What’s with the Flamingos?

It’s an old stereotype that Polish Americans in working class neighborhoods like lawn ornaments. The pink flamingo is the best known lawn ornament of all time and there are a bunch of online articles about the history of the pink flamingo specifically appearing in historically Polish neighborhoods in Buffalo between 1960 and 1980. Since their heyday, kitsch & retro have become trendy again (Urban Outfitters has made a whole business model based on that).
I use it as the icon on the Kaisertown page because I think it’s a unique way to give a subtle nod to the Polish roots of the neighborhood while also likening it to the fact that Kaisertown has a very retro look to it (think Hector’s light up moving sign for example).
It’s one way to take something that was often ridiculed for being tacky and putting a stamp on it to claim the history in a positive way.
