It’s an old stereotype that Polish Americans in working class neighborhoods like lawn ornaments. The pink flamingo is the best known lawn ornament of all time and there are a bunch of online articles about the history of the pink flamingo specifically appearing in historically Polish neighborhoods in Buffalo between 1960 and 1980. Since their heyday, kitsch & retro have become trendy again (Urban Outfitters has made a whole business model based on that).
I use it as the icon on the Kaisertown page because I think it’s a unique way to give a subtle nod to the Polish roots of the neighborhood while also likening it to the fact that Kaisertown has a very retro look to it (think Hector’s light up moving sign for example).
It’s one way to take something that was often ridiculed for being tacky and putting a stamp on it to claim the history in a positive way.
